Col Gaddafi spent last days of life hounded in Sirte
Many homes were smoke-blackened and reeked of burned furniture and carpet. The mess had been augmented by the looters who had swept through the district within hours of it falling on Thursday morning. The rebel stragglers turned out drawers, smashed open doors and overturned cupboards and wardrobes as they were driven by curiosity, greed and a desire to punish the city which had prospered under Gaddafi. For now the city remains deserted of its 130,000 residents and it is difficult to see when it might be made habitable again. The Daily Telegraph found one resident who had ventured into the city to see what had happened to his house when the fighting engulfed the town.
